-Statement-

Yoshinoyama is a sacred site of Shugendo(a unique Japanese belief system of mountain asceticism with deep roots in Yoshino as well as on Mt. Koya, or Koyasan, to the southwest). The ascetic practice is said to involve entering the Mother Mountain, burying oneself in this life, and being reborn from the womb of the deceased.

Rebirth. Reincarnation. This is something that is familiar to the technique of knitting, which I usually work with. A single thread can take on many different shapes when knitted, and when unraveled, it returns to a single thread, which can then take on a different shape the next time. Taking advantage of these characteristics of knitting, I will take a journey through life and death together with the people of Yoshino.

修験道の聖地、吉野山。その修行は、母なる山に入って現世の自分を一度葬り、その胎内から生まれ変わるという疑死再生の修行だといいます。修行者の自分でなくとも、“母なる山”というフレーズはなんとなく聞き覚えがあります。山はやはり母なのでしょうか。

生まれ変わる。輪廻転生。それは私が普段から扱う、編むという技法に通じるものがあります。一本の糸は編まれることで様々な形状になり、ほどけばまた一本の糸に戻り、次にはまた違う形になることができます。そんな編みものの特性を活かし、吉野の皆さんと共に、生と死を巡る旅をします。
