Professionals in School Project, we call PinS Project has been carried out in Tomioka Town elementary and junior high schools since 2018, advocating human resource development for “schools that serve as community hubs. In this project, professionals in creative fields such as artists, architects, and musicians play the role of “transfer students” and share school life with children in an educational setting, aiming to create an environment for mutual learning that transcends generations.(From the official website)

「コミュニティの拠点となる学校」に向けて、ひとづくりを標榜し、富岡町立小中学校を舞台に2018年から「Professionals in School (プロフェッショナル転校生)」を実施してきたPinSプロジェクト。アーティスト、建築家、音楽家などクリエイティブな職種のその道のプロが「転校生」に扮し、教育現場で子供たちと生活を共にしながら世代を超えた共育・学び合いの環境づくりを行っています。（PinS プロジェクトサイトより）

As a transfer student for the 2023 school year, I planned to create Hodokeru Hotoke (Unravelable Buddha) Buddha statues that would watch over school life and incarnate in various ways to save my friends in times of emergency, and leave them at the school. Taking advantage of the characteristics of knitting, which can be traced back to reincarnation (knitting, unknitting, and knitting again), I proposed this work as a disaster infrastructure for this area, which was affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and is also prone to frequent earthquakes.

2023年度の転校生となった私は、学校生活を見守り、非常時にはさまざまに化身して友達を救済する仏像《ほどける仏》を作り、学校に残していくことを計画。編む・ほどく・また編むという、輪廻にも通ずるニットの特性を活かし、東日本大震災の被災地であり、また地震の多いこの地域に、災害時のインフラとしての作品を提案しました。

71 Buddhist statues, the same number of students at that time. I created them while thinking of the Jizo (guardian deity of children) and Dosojin (guardian deity of the community) .

《ほどける仏》当時の児童・生徒数と同じ、71体の仏像。子どもたちを見守るお地蔵様や地域を見守る道祖神を思いながら制作した。

I attended classes and participated in events at school and ate school lunch with everyone.

学校では授業に出たり行事に参加したり、もちろん給食もみんなと一緒に食べる。

In September, first day of school. I groped around and worked with my hands. While working on a project in the plaza in front of the classroom, friends who were interested in the project came over and said, “I want to knit.” Using fingers and needles, they knitted more and more using simple knitting techniques.

8月の始業式後、初登校の9月。仏像のフォルムを掴めないながらも手を動かす。教室前の広場で制作をしていると、興味を持ってくれた友達が「編んでみたい」。指や針を使って、簡単な編み方でどんどん編んでいく。休み時間が終わると、自分の作品に印をつけて授業に戻っていく。

Attends school once a month. Before leaving, left a brief rule and message on the white board.

1ヶ月に1度の登校。不在中、ケンカや怪我をしたり、人の作品を壊したりしないか心配。ホワイトボードに簡単なルールとメッセージを残して帰る。

In October, I exhibited my work at a cultural festival. The teachers made captions for me.

10月、文化祭「永桜祭」に作品を出品。美術の先生や総合文化部の顧問先生がキャプションを作ってくれた。

In November, I worked for an exhibition in Tokyo at school. My friends helped me with the process of making cotton from knit.

11月、東京での展示のために学校でもその制作をする。ニットから綿を作る作業を友達が手伝ってくれた。

January 2024. I started to seriously work on Buddhist statues. While attending classes, taking tests, and playing in the schoolyard, I put my own production first. It was difficult to find a balance because I didn’t have time to create if I took on everything my friends invited me to do.

2024年1月。仏像制作に本腰を入れる。授業に出てテストを受けてみたり校庭で遊んだりしつつも自分の制作第一。友達が誘ってくれること全てに乗っていると制作時間がないので、そのバランスが難しい。不在中に貸し出した糸でバッグを編んでいたり、縄跳びにしたりと自由な友達。

In February, I presented the concept of the work to my friends, and it was difficult to find a way to explain it to them, who ranged in age from 1st grade to 9th grade, so that they could understand it.
